Racing 7th July (Tony' Report)

Wind Force 1/2 Cloudy

Temp 16 degrees

Thursday Racing July 8th

Wind from the north has to be the worst possible direction for windsurfing at Brog. Little gusts whip across the lake all bent on removing unwary windsurfers from their steeds.

It had not been a good day, rained lashed down remorseless all afternoon, only clearing up a few minutes before the race. The wind that had been to say the least intermittent all day, virtually disappeared. Not to be daunted nine contestants drifted around the start line ready for the off. Tony had decided that the best way to approach the start was to sit on his board on the start line with his sail in the water until 15 seconds before the off. It might have worked if Tim hadn’t decided to park his board on top of him at the vital moment (deliberate I ask, I definitely felt that I was being nobbled)

As the start gun went, the excitement got all too much for Julian Hubble in his first race and he promptly fell in.

Chris Foreman got a flier ( as much as you can in a force 1) with Dave Lewis just behind , your reporter didn’t have a very good view of the proceedings up ahead as he was way last off the start line and couldn’t see what was going on up front.

But it was soon clear that this was to be a fleet of three races. Tim rushed through the fleet to join Dave and these two battled it out up front, some good 300 metres from the rest of the pack. The rest were drifting around roughly together with the exception of Julian and Sandy that were having their own personal dual further back.

Mr Skye was dropping back all the while, which was odd for these conditions usually suited Dave very well. When he was past by Mark Fowler the pin finally dropped. For it occurred to him, that this had never happened before (had Mark suddenly improved? Surely not?) It was then and only then that he looked behind to discover he had passengers in the shape of 3 miles of weed trotting along behind.

Meanwhile a battle was ensuing between Chis, Tony and John Andel and they were joined by a weed less Dave for the last lap ( who was as usual pumping his little socks off) Poor Mark was now left on his own to plod his way relentlessly round the final lap (it almost brings a tear to your eye!)

In the far off distance Dave Lewis had seen off the challenge of Tim and was cruising to a third consecutive victory, the pursuing hordes were battling out behind. First Chris moved into third, then John took over the mantle briefly and then weed less Dave moved through. But finally by some unexplained miracle of nature the lake manager got a huge lift and wind shift and nipped past them all to move into third down the final leg.

Dave finished first by some distance, followed by Tim, a considerable time elapsed before Tony scraped home third, ( finding it necessary and much to his disgust to pump down all the last leg to keep Dave behind him) So Dave finished 4th while Chis finding all this exertion far to strenuous came 5th. Mr Andel seemed to have disappeared all together and I’m afraid to report that he had come to a halt. (In Life how many times do you see it? The error of installing cheap power, had he not seen the fate of the clockwork rabbits that didn’t use excel batteries?) John just drifted in 6th under momentum all power gone with only just enough power to whisper “F.….. Racing”

Osterised Mark finished 7th and then under the Grand Prix rules suddenly adopted by the race officer Julian and Sandy (8th & 9th) were saved from the torture of doing a final lap and were in fact finished in time for the beginning of the BBQ and didn’t have to put up with the last burnt sausage this time.

The results have now put Dave Lewis ahead of Mike George. Mike may well regret missing two races by gadding off to Vass for a fortnight, was it worth it I ask?

And so ended another drift, well the BBQ was good!
